A Message from the 2019-2020 President of the Calgary Jung Society

A Message from the 2019-2020 President of the Calgary Jung Society

Welcome to a new year of intelligent exploration, deeper engagement, and nurturing community as we invite you to continue our quest to clarify and/or to more deeply understand the work of Carl Jung. What a challenge. And what a year we have planned for this to happen.

The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. – Carl Jung

The above quotation by Jung reflects for me the transformative reaction experienced by our current board members. Over the past nine months, we have mobilized our creative spirit (and we tapped into the creativity of individual society members) in planning the many events for the Society this year. However, not “two” personalities, but currently five very congenial personalities, comprise the Calgary Jung Society Board of Directors and we are hoping to recruit two more agreeable members this fall. For more information, please see our Volunteers page. Our roster is as follows:

  • President Dr Monique Gibeau
  • Vice-president Marg McKaig
  • Membership Brenda Lane
  • Secretary Dr Elizabeth Croft
  • Communication Amy Ramler
  • Finance Vacant
  • Marketing Vacant

At the CJS spring retreat for the Board and with the attending local Jungian psychoanalysts, the society’s mission and vision for 2019 was recrafted to reflect our current Spirit of the Times. We aim to continue gathering those who have an interest in Jungian thought and its current application to spiritual life (soul), life in general, and to community.

In many ways, Calgary Jung Society strives to be a conduit between the individual member and our collective journey. Indeed, we are a caring community exploring deep concepts of soul with like-minded individuals, in a safe and trusting environment.

How do we understand the impact of what’s happening in our society to our own inner journey? What is going on in our relationships? And, why Jung?

To further explore these and other questions, take a look at the 2019-2020 Calgary Jung Society program for the full year. On our website, you can renew your membership or join us (membership runs from September to September). You can register for one or for all forthcoming events, sign up to volunteer, and then stay tuned for a few surprises.

And speaking of surprises, I am so excited to invite you to a live webcast with Dr. James Hollis on Saturday, November 9, 2019. At 79 years old, Dr. Hollis continues to maintain an incredibly committed speaking schedule (two years of engagements currently) but he was eager to offer us a virtual lecture this fall. Our unusual start time on that Saturday at 10:00 a.m., running to 1:00 p.m., is to accommodate Dr. Hollis’ request for an afternoon presentation and Washington is two hours ahead… so we do hope that you will happily join us in the middle of that day for a lecture and a live Q & A!

And so, to kick off the year, please consider joining us for an evening of convivial conversation on Friday, September 27, from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. for our Member Appreciation Wine and Cheese, and you are welcome to bring a friend. During this event, Dr. Chris Wilkes will speak to the relevance of Jung in today’s world. We will showcase our library, introduce the book for this year’s book club, answer any operational questions for prospective volunteers, and have a draw for several door prizes. Plus more!

On behalf of the CJS Board, I thank you for your ongoing interest in Jung, your commitment to the Calgary Jung Society, and I hope that you will enjoy what we are so very pleased to offer you this year.
